Your segment logic is correct. Your journey conditions are right. But the people who should be getting your message aren't getting it — or they're getting it two days late, long after the relevant moment has passed.
This is audience evaluation lag. It's not a bug. It's a structural characteristic of how AEP evaluates segments — and most teams don't account for it until it's already costing them revenue.

Common Mistake: Building an abandoned cart journey on a batch-evaluated segment. By the time the segment updates, the cart has been abandoned for 18 hours. The "urgency" message arrives the next morning.
How Lag Compounds Across a Journey
Evaluation lag doesn't just affect entry. It compounds at every conditional branch that references a segment.
Example:
- Profile qualifies for "Cart Abandoner" segment — batch evaluation, updates at 2am
- Journey entry fires at 2am — correct
- Wait step: 4 hours
- Condition check: "Is the profile still in 'Active Customer' segment?"
- "Active Customer" is also batch-evaluated — but on a different schedule
- Condition evaluates against a stale snapshot
- Profile takes the wrong branch
Each segment reference in your journey is a potential lag point. The more segment conditions in your canvas, the higher the compounding risk.
Calculating the Revenue Impact
Lag has a direct revenue cost in time-sensitive categories — retail, travel, financial services.
Framework:
- Identify your highest-intent journeys (cart abandonment, browse abandonment, lapse reactivation)
- For each, measure the average time between qualifying event and first message received
- Compare conversion rate by time-to-first-message cohort
- Quantify the gap between your current lag and optimal response time
Most teams that run this analysis find that moving from batch to streaming evaluation on two or three key journeys produces a measurable lift in conversion — without changing a single line of journey logic.
How to Fix It Without Rebuilding Everything
You don't always need to switch evaluation methods. Sometimes the fix is structural:
Option 1 — Replace segment conditions with event conditions Instead of "profile is in Cart Abandoner segment," trigger on the raw event: "commerce.productListAdds occurred and no commerce.purchases in the last 2 hours." Event conditions evaluate in real time — no lag.
Option 2 — Use streaming-evaluated segments for entry, batch for suppression Streaming for entry captures the moment. Batch suppression (e.g., "exclude existing customers") can tolerate a 24-hour lag — that data changes slowly.
Option 3 — Audit evaluation method assignments Go to AEP → Segments → filter by evaluation method. Identify every segment used in a time-sensitive journey that's running on batch. Evaluate whether streaming is viable for that segment definition.
The Diagnostic Questions
Before your next journey launch, answer these:
- What is the evaluation method for every segment this journey references?
- What is the acceptable lag for this use case — seconds, hours, or days?
- Are any conditional branches mid-journey referencing batch-evaluated segments?
- Have you tested entry timing with real profiles in a staging environment?
